CHARACTER CREATION CHALLENGE 2023: Star Trek Adventures (6 of 6)
THE GAME: Star Trek Adventures (2017)
Star Trek Adventures Core Rulebook
One of the best things for me about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the inclusion of an enlisted character in the main cast. Senior Chief Miles O’Brien was a first-class engineer, and showed with Cadet/Ensign/Lieutenant Nog the relationship between a young officer and the Chief mentoring them. The Chief called Nog “Sir”, but Nog definitely knew when to ask the Chief for advice and wisdom. So this final character will be an enlisted member of the Fleet, filling in the Tactical position since the acting CO was promoted out of that job.
Character Creation Sequence
Step One: Choose Species
Step Two: Choose Environment
Step Three: Choose Upbringing
Step Four: Attend the Academy
Step Five: Career Thus Far
Step Six: Career Events
Step Seven: Finishing Touches
Step One: Choose Species
Check it out- an Edosian! Or, Edoan, if you’re an old FASA grognard like myself. This is another race from the animated series, as exemplified by Lieutenant Arex. They have a trilateral body, with three arms and three legs. Our Edosian gets +1 to Fitness, Insight, and Reason, and the Edosian Talent. We also give them the Multi-Tasking Edosian Talent. We’ll name him Rexxen.
Step Two: Choose Environment
Rexxen comes from the Edosian homeworld. He gets a +1 Fitness, +1 Security, and takes the value “Join the Starfleet. See the galaxy.”
Step Three: Choose Upbringing
Rexxen’s family was involved in Diplomacy and Politics. He gets presence +2, Control +1, and Conn +1. He picks up the Dauntless Talent, as politics has taught him not to be cowed.
Step Four: Attend the Academy
Rexxen goes to a Starfleet Enlisted Training Center, and goes to Security Training. He gets Control, Presence, and Fitness +1, and +2 to Security, with +1 to Conn and Engineering. He picks Focuses in Shipboard Tactical Systems and Hand Phasers. He takes the Close Protection Talent. His value is “Stay cool - under fire or otherwise.”
Step Five: Career Thus Far
Rexxen is a Veteran NCO. A Chief. He gets the Veteran Talent, and the Value “Set the Example.”
Step Six: Career Events
The Chief’s first Career Event is “Required to take command.” He gets Daring +1, and Command +1. He takes the value “Lead by example.”
His second Career Event is Solved an Engineering Crisis. He gets Control +1, Engineering +1, and Fusion Reactors.
Step Seven: Finishing Touches
The Chief gets 2 attribute points, we go with Presence and Control. He picks up a point in Command and Engineering. His final value is “Be the rock others lean on.”
Senior Chief Tactical Operator Rexxen has been in the fleet for over thirty years, but not all of them contiguous. Rexxen had retired from the fleet until he was recalled to service due to the conflict with the Cardassians. Rexxen had served on the Fletcher as a Petty Officer during her original service, and was part of the team that brought her out of mothballs and returned her to duty. He is a fully qualified engineer, security crewman, and tactical systems operator. He is filling in the role of Tactical Officer since Grizo was brevetted to commanding officer. Having been Grizo’s Tactical Division Chief for the last three years, he and Grizo have a close relationship of mutual respect and friendship. As the single crewmember with the most time aboard the ship, he has quickly become a go-to for Lieutenant HRuaw, who constantly asks the Senior Chief about patrolling the Klingon Neutral Zone before the Khitomer Accords. The Senior Chief is the most senior enlisted crewmember aboard, and is renowned for his ability to stay calm and cool even when consoles are exploding and alarms are blaring. It’s commonly said if Senior Chief is worried, the ship is really in trouble.
